Mike Rymer Fiction Workshop

I our first workshop with Mike Rymer we went over camera movement term, practised with the dolly and the track. This was great as i had never used them before so it was great having the chance to see how you set it up and how to use them.

At the end of the workshop we were told to go into groups of 4 and come up with a shot list for a montage (my group; Sammi, Rosie, Laura and me). Originally we thought we had to come up with a scene but shot in  montage style, so mainly close ups. But after showing Helen our shot list on the Tuesday workshop, we were told that no narrative was allowed. Our idea was Sammi going through her bookshelf, finding an old photo album of hers, remembering what it was like to go scuba diving and ends up booking a holiday back to Cuba. 

I was very confused as to what exactly we had to (how to film a montage without a narrative). So without a shot list, my group and I had to think of randum things which make us happy. After that we decided to go into the forest - got different shots of nature, dogs. Then we came back to the studios and filmed coffee and smoking - which is something that makes different people happy.

I feel that if we had a better understanding of what it was we had to do exactly we would of had better shots. I feel that my video now is very randum and does not make any sense. Never the less, this is my attempt at creating a montage without a narrative:

Documentary - Storyville Episode: Blackfish

StoryVille Episode Director: Gabriela Cowperthwaite Producer: Gabriela Cowperthwaite Writers: Gabriela Cowperthwaite, Eli B. Despres and Tim Zimmerman Synopsis: It concerns Tilikum, an orca held by Sea World and the controversy over captive killer whales Even though I analysed this documentary for my script I wanted to analyse it for my research as well.  When watching it, it starts off with Voice over and archive footage of what happened (v.o is the telephone call to emergency).  It then goes on (which I though was smart) and shows and advertisement for Sea World = shows glory, happiness, once in a life time opportunity.  Another thing which I enjoyed was the fact that all the people that were interviewed for the documentary were ex-trainers for Sea World. Evaluation

Writing the final versions of the script was fun, exciting but also a long process. Having a clear idea of what directions my episodes where going I wrote skeleton drafts to begin with and worked like that. With each new draft,  added new jokes, stories lines. With guidance from Simon and his suggestions for certain characters I did make a few changes to some story lines and slightly changed my characters personality. In the first few drafts of each episode Hara was becoming somewhat annoying and lacked a lot of humour. Therefore I decided to make her into a bit of a spiritual person who gives herself a pep talk in each episode but also one of those people who believes in positive thinking and constantly carries a positive thinking book with her, sage and incense.  Kotchy, didn't have much of a story, if you got rid of him you wouldn't even notice.
