History of TV shows

This blog post is to just show research into the history of shows - how they came about and how they developed.
Spelling Bee

TV was first broadcasted November 2nd 1936 from Alexandra Palace. The first game show to be broadcasted was Spelling Bee in May 1938 - the game had its contestants spell a series of words and that was it. But during the second world war there was no TV.

In the 1950s a simple panel show called Whats my Line came about which carried on running until the 90s. Then in 1955 ITV was formed to carry out commercials and be formed from a number of local companies --> making some game shows not shown in some parts of the country. The top hosts for this period of time was Hughie Green and Michael Miles. With commercial funding, it allowed game shows to offer money prizes, with shows like Take your Pick, Double your Money. In the late 1950s ITV put a quiz show six times a week during prime time with the most popular being Criss Cross Quiz, Dotto, The 64,000 dollar question, Concentration and Twenty One (most being imported from the US). Also, celebrity panel shows were introduced such as I've got a secret, Tell the Truth. Furthermore, shows with stunts and practical jokes came about like People are Funny, Make up your mind. Likewise, shows were introduced for school kids which provided fun like Crackerjack.

In the 1970s - ITV was the channel with sitcoms and the famous politically incorrect comedian Benny Hill. Whilst, BBC provided a stern alternative for proper, upstanding middle class families with shows like Ask the family and Generation Game. More 1970s shows include 3-2-1 and Sale of the century. In the 1980s Countdown was introduced on the new channel - Channel 4. Although money was everything in the 1980s proved by shows like The price is right, TV was influenced by American television shows which led to the creation of Blind Date. In the late 1990s light entertainment came about with shows like Blankety Blank and Call my Bluff. Also, lifestyle game shows came about like Masterchef, Can't Cook Won't Cook. The famous game show Who wants to be a millionaire, also came about in 1998, with shows like The Weakest Link following.
