Scenes which inspired me

Needing some inspirations for writing my scenes I decided to do some research into movie or sitcom scenes, to get an understanding of how they presented their humour and comedy.

Below are a few scenes which inspired me and I will discuss why I chose them.

Ben Stiller's character, Tommy, is introduced at the theatre when Ross and his girlfriend, and Rachel and Tommy go to watch Joe's play.

At first glance, Tommy seems like your normal, average guy. When Ross and Tommy go to grab their seats at the theatre there is an older couple sitting in their seats. the contrast is shown when Ross politely asks them to get them because they are sitting in their seats, then Tommy begins to shout at them and call them 'idiots'. It's humorous and makes this character stand and create a moment. It's also funny because Ross is the only one who witnesses it, but also Tommy goes back to behaving as if nothing ever happened.

When Ross tries to warn Rachel about Tommy, she says he is just being jealous and that he is a perfectly normal guy. In this scene Ross, leaves the coffee shop holding hot coffee and nearly bumps into Tommy. Tommy as usual loses his temper and shouts and calls Ross names. The comedy is done so that Ross is standing outside the coffee shop, right behind Monica, Rachel and Chandler who seem oblivious to what is happening, even though Ross is knocking on the window to try and get their attention.

Tommy gets caught by everyone when he goes to use the phone in Chandler's house and gets mad at the baby duck, before storming off.

Even though he is only a minor character,  all of friends characters stand out and their is something unique about them. If Ben Stiller wasn't a crazy bipolar guy it would be boring, and if Ross was not the only one who noticed again it would be boring. A moment is created through the personality of the character.

The yoga instructor comes out of the sea as a sex God, with his muscular tanned body and his long hair. He comes out wearing speedos and in slow motion to add effect.

In the four minute yoga scene, the instructor is seen to sexualise yoga by laying on top of his student and moving himself in a backwards and forwards position, whilst also making groaning sounds.

"head down, bottom up. I will transfer you my energy, he is my karma, my karma is on you" on top of a man, while he grinds him. He takes a yoga sex position with one of the wifes and repeats "deeper and deeper", whilst also grinding on the men again and grabbing the mens boobs. Likewise he lays on top of the women  grinding on them while he makes noises.

Why these scenes:
When writing the yoga scene with Andy and then the Love Guru with Andy and Stav, I felt like it was missing something. Taking into consideration how Friends used a character to create a moment and Couples Retreat, used a sex maniac I though about combining them. So, for the yoga scene I opted for an introduction of a calm yoga instructed, who seems hippie and all about love, but as the lesson begins she loses her temper towards her students. Thus creating a moment through a character but also comedy and a point to even having that character.

Likewise, for the Love Guru, I decided to have him introduced as your typical old man, with sweatpants and a horrible attitude. When he realises that Andy and Stav are there to actually see him, he goes off and changes his look completely, along with his voice. He comes back with dyed hair, dye moustache, and chest hair, and a calm attitude towards everything. Towards the end of the sitcom, it is revealed that the love guru was also the priest who had a foreign accent. I took a bit from the bipolar Tommy and the sexual yoga instructor and gave a man you has different personalities, thus making this character stand out, as well as add humour to the show.
