Case Study: Sitcom analysis of The Ranch

The Ranch

IMDB Rating: 7.7
Creator: Jim Patterson and Don Reo
Brief Synopsis: The son of a Colorado rancher returns home from a semi-pro football career to run the family business.

How are characters introduced (Pilot episode)?
Beau Bennet (father) is first seen getting out of his red truck with his dog and walking into his home (made from wood). Straight away we are introduced to Colt Bennet (youngest son) who has just returned home after chasing a career in football. The two argue over their choices in life with each other joking about it. Jameson Bennet is still sitting on the couch being completely ignored and seems used to, as he points out and states that this reminds him of his childhood. We are then introduced to the mother Maggie Bennet who owns a bar and ignores her husband while giving her attention to the youngest son only.

What is the style or the humour?
As it is a Netflix show, it means that they are able to freely express themselves more through the use of swear words as well as discussing politics and stereotyping the dad for being a typical red neck.

The sitcom tries to target red-state audience with country music and a character who doesn't believe in global warming and makes North Korea jokes.

Although not many laugh out loud moments, it is still cleverly written through wordplay and a fun dynamic between brothers Colt and Rooster.

How many stories in each episode?
Just one story is followed and that is the main characters who is played by Ashton Kutcher

What is the layout of the sitcom?
The locations used in the sitcom are the bar which the mum owns, kitchen and living room which are together, emphasising how small the house is, the actual ranch with the animals.

Being a non traditional sitcom, by being 30 minute long episodes it still follows the three camera layout.
