Synopsis:
Its a story about a young girl father dying and her mother finding a new husband. We are shown how she is excluded from the family and sexually abused and physically abused by her step-father. The short film tries to show how children are still abused and not helped.

What filming intrigued me:
  • Wide shot at the beginning showing the happy family (creates a happy positive atmosphere) but then we are shown the little girl crying and looking at a picture of her father. Makes us wonder what happened

  • We are shown the different father-daughter relationship (biological and stepfather)
  • The dark blue colours when the stepfather is in the shot - creates a depressed atmosphere (melancholic)

  • The 'fizzy effect' when there is a flashback to how her step-father is abusing her (makes it more dramatic and horrifying)

  • The part of the short film which relates to the title: they are taking a new family portrait (mother, step-father and new born) but the little girl is put to stand which makes her not be in the picture

  • the ending which shows a still image of the stepfather beating the girl with his belt with crying and screaming in the background which then ends with cliffhanger

Although my script is not depressing or violent, I thought this short film was relevant to mine as it shows a different side to what some families are like instead of the stereotypical happy American family. I felt it was realistic which is what I tried to do with my script (or english-cypriots families)

  1. hi imogen - there is some excellent work appearing in your journal. make sure that in the research you do (like this post) you go into depth as why this research is relevant to your own project, how it affected it. this is key. also make sure that you are evidencing the prep into your shoot - shot lists/story-boards/loactions etc etc.
    good work so far though!
